What a Production Planner does

Plans what to make and when so factories meet customer demand while using people, machines, and inventory efficiently.

  • Analyze demand forecasts and customer orders to set production priorities
  • Build weekly and daily production plans based on capacity and material limits
  • Coordinate with purchasing and materials teams to ensure parts arrive on time
  • Release work orders and update schedules when issues or changes happen
  • Track plan vs actual output and investigate gaps and delays
  • Communicate plan changes to production, quality, and logistics teams
  • Maintain planning data like lead times, routings, and safety stock settings

A day in the life

  1. Review yesterday output, shortages, and late orders; adjust today plan
  2. Meet with production and materials teams to confirm capacity and constraints
  3. Update schedules in planning system and release or reschedule work orders
  4. Answer questions from sales and customer service about delivery dates
  5. End day by checking key metrics and preparing next-day priorities
