What a Maintenance Planner does

Plans and schedules maintenance work so equipment stays reliable, parts are ready, and production downtime is minimized.

  • Coordinate preventive maintenance plans with production schedules and shutdown windows
  • Build weekly work plans with clear job steps, labor hours, and safety notes
  • Check equipment history to prioritize work based on risk, failures, and criticality
  • Confirm parts, tools, and permits are ready before work starts
  • Create and update work orders in the maintenance system and track status
  • Communicate plan changes to technicians, supervisors, and operations teams

  • Report backlog, schedule compliance, and downtime drivers to stakeholders

A day in the life

  1. Review new breakdowns and adjust the daily schedule with operations
  2. Walk the floor to confirm access, safety needs, and parts availability
  3. Build next-week plans and reserve labor for high-priority assets
  4. Meet with maintenance and production to agree on downtime windows
  5. Close work orders, update plans, and review backlog and KPIs
