What a Bartender does

Prepares and serves drinks for guests, keeps the bar stocked and clean, and supports fast, safe, friendly service.

  • Prepare cocktails, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks to recipe and guest preference
  • Greet guests, take orders, check IDs when required, and handle responsible service
  • Set up the bar: ice, garnishes, glassware, tools, and station organization
  • Keep inventory, restock supplies, and report low items to avoid running out mid-shift
  • Operate the register, process payments, and balance cash and receipts at close
  • Clean and sanitize bar tools, surfaces, and glassware to meet hygiene standards
  • Coordinate with servers and kitchen to time service and handle special requests

A day in the life

  1. Arrive early to prep garnishes, stock bottles, chill glassware, and check equipment
  2. Serve a rush: take orders fast, mix accurately, and keep the bar area organized
  3. Communicate with servers about tickets, wait times, and guest issues
  4. Restock between waves, wipe down surfaces, and track what is running low
  5. Close out: count cash, log waste, deep clean, and reset for the next shift
