What a Barista does

Makes coffee and other drinks for customers, keeping orders accurate, fast, and welcoming while maintaining a clean, safe drink station.

  • Prepare espresso-based drinks and brewed coffee to recipe and customer preferences
  • Take orders, answer menu questions, and handle payments quickly and politely
  • Steam milk, pull espresso shots, and adjust grind or dose for consistent taste
  • Keep the bar area clean, stocked, and organized during busy service
  • Follow food safety, allergen, and hygiene rules for drinks and equipment
  • Receive deliveries, rotate stock, and track low items to avoid running out
  • Handle customer issues calmly and fix mistakes to protect service quality

A day in the life

  1. Open the station, check supplies, calibrate espresso, and prep milk and syrups
  2. Work rush periods taking orders, making drinks, and calling out pickups
  3. Clean as you go, restock cups and ingredients, and wipe down surfaces
  4. Close by deep-cleaning machines, counting stock, and setting up for tomorrow
