What a Electrician does

Install, test, and repair electrical wiring and equipment so homes, buildings, and sites stay safe and powered.

  • Read plans and wiring diagrams to plan safe cable routes and equipment locations
  • Install conduit, cable, outlets, switches, panels, and lighting to code and specs
  • Test circuits and equipment using meters to confirm correct voltage and grounding
  • Diagnose faults like shorts, overloads, and loose connections and repair them
  • Upgrade or replace panels, breakers, and wiring to improve safety and capacity
  • Follow lockout and safety steps to protect people and prevent electrical fires
  • Document work, label circuits, and explain fixes and maintenance to customers

A day in the life

  1. Review the job plan, hazards, and materials, then set up tools and safety gear
  2. Run conduit and pull cable, then mount devices and connect circuits in panels
  3. Test and troubleshoot issues, then rework connections until results pass checks
  4. Coordinate with other trades and update the customer or supervisor on progress
