Day 1 on the Electrical Engineering Technician path.

What a Electrical Engineering Technician does

Help engineers build, wire, and test electrical devices and control panels so products and systems work safely and reliably.

  • Build and wire prototypes from schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Assemble control panels and route cables to good safety standards
  • Set up and run electrical tests on circuits, sensors, and power supplies
  • Use meters and scopes to measure signals and find faults
  • Document test results, changes, and build notes for engineers
  • Troubleshoot wiring, connectors, and components to fix failures
  • Support lab and workshop safety, including lockout and safe handling

A day in the life

  1. Review drawings and test plans, then gather parts and tools
  2. Build or rework a prototype, label wires, and check connections
  3. Run tests, record readings, and report issues to the engineer
  4. Join a short check-in to plan next steps and parts needed
  5. Update logs and clean up the bench for the next build

Tools you will use

Test equipment: multimeter, oscilloscope, function generatorHand tools: wire strippers, crimpers, torque driversSoldering: soldering iron, hot air reworkDocumentation: spreadsheets, lab notebooksCAD viewing: electrical schematics viewersPower tools: drill, heat gun
