What a Automation Technician does

Keeps automated machines running safely by troubleshooting faults, doing repairs, and supporting upgrades for production and facility teams.

  • Diagnose breakdowns on automated machines using alarms, logs, and basic tests
  • Repair or replace sensors, motors, valves, wiring, and pneumatic parts
  • Assist with PLC and HMI changes under approved procedures
  • Run preventive maintenance checks and calibrations to reduce downtime
  • Support equipment changeovers, line startups, and production trials
  • Document fixes, parts used, and recurring issues for the maintenance team
  • Follow safety lockout steps and verify machines are safe to restart

A day in the life

  1. Review shift handover notes, downtime reports, and the top problem machines
  2. Respond to calls on the floor, isolate the fault, and get the line running again
  3. Do planned checks, clean sensors, and verify safety devices during quiet windows
  4. Meet with operators and engineers to plan a changeover or small upgrade
  5. Log work completed, order parts, and update maintenance records before shift end
