What a Control Systems Technician does

Keeps automated equipment running by inspecting, testing, and repairing control panels, wiring, and sensors for factories and facilities.

  • Inspect control panels, wiring, and sensors for wear, damage, or loose connections
  • Diagnose faults using meters, drawings, and alarm histories to find root causes
  • Repair or replace sensors, relays, power supplies, and control components
  • Test inputs and outputs and verify safe operation after maintenance or changes
  • Calibrate instruments and set up basic control loops to meet process targets
  • Document work, update labels, and keep maintenance records accurate
  • Coordinate with operators and engineers to schedule downtime and reduce disruption

A day in the life

  1. Review work orders, alarms, and safety permits, then plan the day with the team
  2. Walk the line to check panels, sensors, and actuators, and talk with operators
  3. Troubleshoot a stop or quality issue, test signals, then repair and retest
  4. Log findings, update drawings or labels, and hand over status at shift end
