Day 1 on the Structural Engineer path.

What a Structural Engineer does

Designs and checks buildings and infrastructure so they stay safe under weight, wind, earthquakes, and daily use.

  • Design structural systems for buildings, bridges, towers, and industrial facilities
  • Analyze loads like gravity, wind, snow, and earthquakes using calculations and models
  • Select materials and member sizes for strength, stiffness, cost, and buildability
  • Create drawings and specifications that contractors can build from
  • Review shop drawings and respond to construction questions and changes
  • Coordinate with architects, civil engineers, and contractors to resolve clashes
  • Inspect sites to verify key structural elements match the design
  • Document decisions to meet safety codes, permits, and quality standards

A day in the life

  1. Review project plans, site constraints, and code requirements before starting analysis
  2. Run load cases, check member sizes, and update drawings or calculation notes
  3. Meet with architects and other engineers to align on changes and risks
  4. Answer contractor questions and review shop drawings for steel or concrete
  5. Do a site visit for a key pour or connection, then write a short report
