Day 1 on the Climate Adaptation Engineer path.

What a Climate Adaptation Engineer does

Assess climate risks and design roads, buildings, and other infrastructure that keep working through floods, heatwaves, and storms. The design must hold up even as the climate changes over the years a project is used.

  • Assess climate risks like flooding, heat, and storms for sites and assets
  • Design flood defenses, drainage, and stormwater systems for future rainfall
  • Add heat-resilient features to buildings, roads, and public spaces
  • Run climate models and projections to set design conditions and safety margins
  • Apply resilience standards (such as the emerging PAS 3090 and the published PAS 2080) to plans and specifications
  • Write adaptation plans that prioritize upgrades by risk and cost
  • Review existing infrastructure for weak points under hotter, wetter futures
  • Coordinate with planners, ecologists, and asset owners on resilient solutions

A day in the life

  1. Review climate projections and asset data, then update a risk assessment
  2. Model flood or heat scenarios and compare design options for resilience
  3. Meet with planners and asset owners to agree priorities and budgets
  4. Draft an adaptation plan section and check it against resilience standards
  5. Visit a site to inspect drainage, defenses, and exposure to hazards
