What a Facilities Engineer does

Keeps building utilities and critical systems running safely and efficiently so people and operations can work without downtime.

  • Inspect HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire systems to spot issues early
  • Diagnose equipment faults and coordinate repairs with technicians and vendors
  • Plan preventive maintenance schedules to reduce breakdowns and extend asset life
  • Monitor energy and water use and propose efficiency improvements
  • Review work permits and safety procedures for high-risk tasks like lockout tagout
  • Support building projects by reviewing drawings, scopes, and commissioning plans
  • Respond to alarms and outages and restore services with minimal disruption

A day in the life

  1. Start with a walkdown, check alarms, and review overnight work orders
  2. Meet with operations and contractors to plan maintenance and access windows
  3. Troubleshoot a system issue, document findings, and order parts if needed
  4. Review energy trends and update maintenance logs and compliance records
