Day 1 on the Civil Engineer path.

What a Civil Engineer does

Plan, design, and check infrastructure like roads, bridges, and water systems so communities stay safe and can grow.

  • Design roads, bridges, drainage, and site layouts that meet safety and budget needs
  • Analyze loads, soil reports, and water flow to choose safe designs and materials
  • Create drawings, models, and specifications for construction teams to follow
  • Estimate quantities, costs, and schedules, and update plans when conditions change
  • Coordinate with architects, utilities, contractors, and public agencies to align requirements
  • Review permits, codes, and environmental constraints to reduce risk and delays
  • Inspect construction progress and test results to confirm work matches the design

A day in the life

  1. Review project goals, site constraints, and updates from contractors or inspectors
  2. Model a design option, update drawings, and document key assumptions and calculations
  3. Join coordination meetings to resolve clashes between utilities, roads, and structures
  4. Visit a site to check progress, answer questions, and record issues for follow-up
