Day 1 on the Building Services Engineer path.

What a Building Services Engineer does

Designs and improves building systems like heating, cooling, water, and power so people stay safe, comfortable, and buildings run efficiently.

  • Design HVAC, plumbing, drainage, and electrical layouts for new or renovated buildings
  • Calculate heating and cooling loads and size equipment, ducts, pipes, and cables
  • Create drawings, specifications, and schedules for contractors to build from
  • Coordinate with architects and structural teams to fit systems into the building
  • Review designs for safety, codes, energy use, and maintainability
  • Inspect sites during construction to answer questions and resolve clashes
  • Test and commission systems to confirm performance matches the design
  • Troubleshoot comfort, noise, air quality, and reliability issues in existing buildings

A day in the life

  1. Review project plans, client needs, and code requirements, then plan design tasks
  2. Model loads and select equipment, then update drawings and specifications
  3. Meet with other disciplines to resolve clashes and agree on changes
  4. Answer contractor questions and check site progress against the design
  5. Document decisions, update calculations, and prepare for the next review
