Day 1 on the Product Development Engineer path.

What a Product Development Engineer does

Develops and improves physical products by turning ideas into tested designs that can be manufactured reliably and safely.

  • Design parts and assemblies from requirements, cost targets, and user needs
  • Build prototypes and run tests to check performance, safety, and durability
  • Analyze failures and test data to find root causes and fix issues
  • Create drawings, tolerances, and specs for suppliers and manufacturing teams
  • Coordinate with manufacturing to improve build steps, yield, and quality
  • Review materials and processes to balance strength, weight, and cost
  • Document design changes and support approvals for production release

A day in the life

  1. Review test results, defects, and priorities with the team
  2. Model or update CAD designs, then release drawings for review
  3. Build or inspect prototypes and plan the next test run
  4. Meet with manufacturing and suppliers to solve build or quality issues

Tools you will use

CAD: SolidWorks, Creo, Fusion 360Prototyping: 3D printing, machining, hand toolsTesting: calipers, force gauges, environmental testsData analysis: Excel, PythonDocumentation: drawings, GD&TProject tracking: Jira, Trello
