Day 1 on the Human Factors Engineer path.

What a Human Factors Engineer does

Improves products and workplaces by studying how people think and act, reducing errors and making systems easier and safer to use.

  • Plan and run usability tests with real users and realistic tasks
  • Analyze tasks, workflows, and human error risks in systems and workplaces
  • Design and review interfaces, controls, labels, and procedures for clarity
  • Create user requirements and translate findings into design changes
  • Build prototypes and test layouts, displays, alarms, and instructions
  • Work with engineers, designers, and safety teams to resolve issues
  • Document evidence for safety, quality, and regulatory reviews

A day in the life

  1. Review feedback, incident reports, or test notes to pick top usability risks
  2. Meet with the product team to align on users, tasks, and success measures
  3. Run a short study, observe users, and capture errors, time, and comments
  4. Turn findings into clear recommendations and update specs or mockups
  5. Share results, track fixes, and re-test to confirm improvements
