Day 1 on the Automotive Engineer path.

What a Automotive Engineer does

Design and test vehicle parts and systems so cars and trucks are safe, reliable, efficient, and affordable to build.

  • Design vehicle components like chassis, powertrain, brakes, and interiors
  • Model and simulate performance, durability, noise, and energy use
  • Build prototypes and run lab and road tests to validate designs
  • Analyze test data to find root causes and improve designs
  • Write requirements, test plans, and engineering reports for approvals
  • Coordinate with manufacturing to ensure designs can be built at scale
  • Support safety, emissions, and quality compliance for target markets

A day in the life

  1. Review test results and decide next design changes with the team
  2. Work in CAD and simulation tools, then document updates and risks
  3. Meet with suppliers or manufacturing to solve fit, cost, or quality issues
  4. Visit a lab or test track to troubleshoot a problem on a prototype

Tools you will use

CAD: CATIA, Siemens NX, SolidWorksSimulation: ANSYS, AbaqusData analysis: MATLAB, PythonTest equipment: sensors, data loggersQuality methods: FMEA, 8DDocumentation: Excel, PowerPoint
