Day 1 on the Fixture Design Engineer path.

What a Fixture Design Engineer does

Designs and improves fixtures and jigs that hold parts safely and accurately so teams can build, machine, and test products consistently.

  • Design fixtures and jigs to locate, clamp, and support parts during build and test
  • Create 3D CAD models and 2D drawings with tolerances, notes, and bill of materials
  • Select materials and standard components like clamps, pins, bushings, and fasteners
  • Analyze stack-ups and fit to ensure repeatable positioning and safe clearances
  • Prototype and iterate fixtures based on shop feedback and trial runs
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, quality, and operators to meet process needs
  • Write simple work instructions and support fixture setup and troubleshooting

A day in the life

  1. Review build issues and requests from the line, quality, or machinists
  2. Model a fixture in CAD, check clearances, and update drawings for release
  3. Meet with manufacturing to confirm locating scheme, cycle time, and safety
  4. Walk the shop floor to test a prototype and capture improvement notes
  5. Track changes, order parts, and support first use during production runs

Tools you will use

CAD: SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion 3602D drawings: GD&T, drawing standardsPrototyping: 3D printing, basic machiningMetrology: calipers, micrometers, height gaugeAnalysis: tolerance stack-up, simple hand calculationsProject tracking: spreadsheets, issue trackers
