Day 1 on the HVAC Engineer path.

What a HVAC Engineer does

Designs and improves building heating and cooling systems so people stay comfortable while energy use and safety risks stay low.

  • Design HVAC layouts, equipment selections, and control sequences for new or renovated buildings
  • Calculate heating and cooling loads and size ducts, pipes, fans, pumps, and diffusers
  • Create drawings, specifications, and schedules for construction and procurement
  • Coordinate with architects, electrical, plumbing, and structural teams to avoid clashes
  • Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, and site installation for compliance
  • Test and troubleshoot system performance during commissioning and handover
  • Improve energy efficiency using better controls, ventilation strategies, and heat recovery
  • Document decisions and support permits, inspections, and safety requirements

A day in the life

  1. Review project goals, codes, and floor plans, then plan the design tasks for the day
  2. Run load calculations and update drawings and equipment schedules in CAD or BIM tools
  3. Meet with the project team to resolve clashes, costs, and constructability questions
  4. Answer contractor questions and review submittals or site photos for installation issues
  5. Write notes, update reports, and track open items before the next design review
