Day 1 on the Mechanical Design Engineer path.

What a Mechanical Design Engineer does

Designs mechanical parts and assemblies in CAD for products and machines, turning ideas into manufacturable drawings and prototypes.

  • Design 3D parts and assemblies in CAD based on requirements and constraints
  • Create 2D drawings with dimensions, tolerances, and notes for manufacturing
  • Analyze strength, stiffness, and fit to reduce failures and rework
  • Build and test prototypes, then update designs based on results
  • Select materials and standard components to meet cost, weight, and durability goals
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, suppliers, and quality to ensure buildability
  • Document design decisions, changes, and release packages for production

A day in the life

  1. Review requirements, risks, and priorities with the team and update your task plan
  2. Model parts in CAD, check clearances, and run quick calculations or simulations
  3. Join design reviews to get feedback from manufacturing, test, and quality
  4. Answer shop-floor questions and adjust drawings when issues appear
  5. Track changes in a revision system and prepare files for prototype or production

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering or product design engineering
  • Diploma or higher diploma in mechanical design or manufacturing engineering
  • Apprenticeship style training with CAD and drafting plus supervised project work
  • Short courses in CAD and GD&T combined with a strong portfolio

How people get their first job

  • Apply for mechanical design internships or co-op placements
  • Start as a CAD technician or mechanical drafter and grow into design ownership
  • Build a portfolio with 3 to 5 CAD projects and drawings showing tolerances
  • Earn a recognized CAD certification and practice with timed design exercises
  • Join a student engineering team and take responsibility for a subsystem design
