Day 1 on the Generative Design Specialist path.

What a Generative Design Specialist does

Set up the AI tools that propose optimised part shapes, then judge and validate the results. The work bridges classic mechanical design with AI-driven geometry, often for lightweight parts made by 3D printing.

  • Set up generative design and topology optimisation runs that propose optimised part shapes
  • Define the goals, loads, and limits the algorithm must respect
  • Run the solver, then judge, refine, and clean up the proposed geometry
  • Validate AI-proposed shapes with finite element analysis (FEA) and physical tests
  • Prepare lightweight organic parts for additive manufacturing (AM), also called 3D printing
  • Build reusable design rules so the team gets consistent, trustworthy results
  • Explain to engineers why a shape passed, failed, or needs another run

A day in the life

  1. Review yesterday's generative runs and pick the shapes worth keeping
  2. Set up a new study in nTopology with fresh loads and limits
  3. Meet with mechanical and manufacturing teams to agree on print and cost limits
  4. Run a finite element analysis check, compare it to the proposed shape, and log results
  5. Clean up a chosen geometry and hand it off for prototype printing

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering or product design engineering
  • Bachelors degree in aerospace engineering with a focus on lightweight structures
  • Masters degree in computational design, additive manufacturing, or design optimisation
  • Technical diploma plus a strong portfolio of generative and 3D printed parts

How people get their first job

  • Apply for design or simulation internships that touch generative design tools
  • Start as a mechanical design engineer and take ownership of topology optimisation work
  • Build a portfolio of generative parts with loads, results, and validation checks
  • Earn short courses in nTopology, Fusion generative design, and design for additive
  • Join a student team and own the lightweight, 3D printed parts on a build
