Day 1 on the Fluid Dynamics Engineer path.

What a Fluid Dynamics Engineer does

Studies how liquids and gases move to help teams design safer, quieter, and more efficient machines and vehicles.

  • Analyze flow behavior in parts like pipes, ducts, pumps, and airfoils
  • Build CFD simulations to predict pressure, drag, lift, and heat transfer
  • Plan and run lab tests like wind tunnel or flow loop experiments
  • Compare simulation results with test data and explain differences
  • Recommend design changes to reduce losses, noise, vibration, or cavitation
  • Write clear reports and present findings to engineers and managers
  • Support troubleshooting when products fail performance or safety targets

A day in the life

  1. Review requirements, past test data, and the latest design changes
  2. Set up a CFD run, check mesh quality, and monitor solver stability
  3. Meet with design and test teams to align on what to measure next
  4. Analyze results, make plots, and document assumptions and limits

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or chemical engineering
  • Masters degree focused on fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, or turbomachinery
  • Technical diploma plus strong CFD portfolio and lab experience
  • Research projects or thesis work in a fluids or thermal lab

How people get their first job

  • Apply for internships in aerodynamics, turbomachinery, HVAC, or CFD simulation
  • Start in test engineering and learn flow measurement and data analysis
  • Build a portfolio with CFD case studies and validation against experiments
  • Join a university lab team working on wind tunnel or pump testing
  • Earn short courses in CFD basics, meshing, and turbulence modeling
