Day 1 on the Police Drone and Robotics Operator path.

What a Police Drone and Robotics Operator does

Flies police drones and runs ground robots so officers see a scene before they arrive, then keeps the live video, evidence, and flight legal. Aviation rules and pilot certificates vary by country, so the same job needs different paperwork in, for example, the US versus the UK.

  • Launch a Drone as First Responder (DFR) flight so a drone reaches a scene early
  • Watch the live video and call what is seen to officers on the ground
  • Plan flights and keep the aircraft inside airspace, height, and battery limits
  • Run ground robots to search buildings, check packages, and reduce officer risk
  • Map crash and crime scenes from the air to support reports and court
  • Support search-and-rescue and crowd monitoring with thermal and zoom cameras
  • Save evidence-grade footage with time, location, and a clear chain of custody
  • Keep certificates, waivers, and flight logs current for the local regulator

A day in the life

  1. Check weather, airspace, batteries, and the day's authorisations before any flight
  2. Take a priority call, launch a drone, and stream video to responding units
  3. Talk officers in over radio, then send a ground robot into a risky building
  4. Map a collision scene from the air and log the footage as evidence
  5. End shift by charging batteries, backing up video, and updating flight records

Tools you will use

Aircraft: multirotor drones, fixed-wing drones, Drone as First Responder (DFR)Ground robots: tactical wheeled robots, throwable scout robotsCameras: zoom, thermal, low-light, mapping payloadsFlight software: ground control stations, live video feeds, geofencing appsNavigation: GPS, airspace and no-fly mapsEvidence systems: secure footage storage, digital evidence management platformsCommunication: police radio, dispatch and mapping consoles

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • High school diploma plus police academy or civilian public safety training
  • Remote pilot certification, such as Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 in the US
  • UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) authorisation: the GVC or the newer Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC) replacing it
  • Short courses in drone mapping, thermal imaging, and crime-scene photography
  • Diploma or degree in criminal justice, geographic information systems, or robotics

How people get their first job

  • In the US, earn FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate, seek waivers, and follow emerging Part 108 BVLOS rules
  • In the UK, gain CAA operational authorisation via the GVC or the newer Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC)
  • Join a police cadet, volunteer, or community support role to learn how operations work
  • Build flight hours and a logbook with a personal hobby drone in legal areas
  • Practice aerial mapping and clear incident write-ups to show evidence-handling skill
  • Apply for a trainee drone unit or robotics technician role to learn the kit
