What a Border Patrol Officer does

Protects a countrys borders by patrolling, checking people and cargo, and responding to incidents to keep communities safe.

  • Patrol border areas on foot, vehicle, boat, or aircraft to spot illegal crossings
  • Inspect vehicles, cargo, and documents at checkpoints and border crossings
  • Interview travelers and suspects to confirm identity, intent, and legal status
  • Detect and stop smuggling of drugs, weapons, and other prohibited goods
  • Respond to alarms, sensor hits, and calls for help in remote locations
  • Coordinate with customs, police, and emergency services during incidents
  • Write detailed reports and collect evidence to support investigations and court cases

A day in the life

  1. Start shift with a briefing on alerts, weather, and high-risk areas
  2. Patrol assigned zone, check tracks or sensor hits, and stop suspicious activity
  3. Run checkpoint inspections, ask questions, and verify documents and records
  4. Handle an incident, secure the scene, and coordinate transport or medical aid
  5. Finish with paperwork, evidence logging, and a handoff to the next shift
