What a Park Ranger does

Helps keep parks safe and enjoyable by guiding visitors, protecting nature, and responding to incidents and hazards.

  • Patrol park areas to spot hazards, rule violations, and visitor needs
  • Provide visitor information, directions, and safety briefings at stations and on trails
  • Respond to emergencies such as injuries, lost hikers, fires, or severe weather
  • Protect wildlife and habitats by enforcing rules and reporting environmental damage
  • Maintain trails, signs, campsites, and basic facilities using hand tools and equipment
  • Document incidents, write reports, and collect evidence when rules are broken
  • Support education programs like guided walks, talks, and school visits
  • Coordinate with police, fire, medical teams, and volunteers during operations

A day in the life

  1. Check weather, alerts, and patrol plan, then inspect key trails and facilities
  2. Answer visitor questions, give permits or guidance, and handle minor issues early
  3. Do maintenance tasks like clearing debris, fixing signs, and checking restrooms
  4. Respond to calls for help, then record details and debrief with the team
  5. End shift by updating logs, restocking gear, and planning next day priorities
