What a Firefighter does

Protects people and property by responding to fires and emergencies, giving first aid, and teaching safety.

  • Respond to fire, rescue, and medical calls and secure the scene
  • Operate hoses, pumps, ladders, and extinguishers to control fires
  • Search buildings, rescue people, and provide basic life support
  • Ventilate structures and remove smoke and hazardous materials safely
  • Inspect buildings for fire risks and explain prevention steps
  • Maintain vehicles, breathing gear, and tools so they are ready to use
  • Write incident reports and communicate updates to dispatch and teams

A day in the life

  1. Check trucks, radios, medical kits, and breathing gear at shift start
  2. Train on drills like ladder work, rescue, and first aid skills
  3. Respond to emergency calls, coordinate with the crew, and debrief after
  4. Clean, restock, and document incidents, then prepare for the next call
