What a Customs Officer does

Inspect people and goods crossing borders to enforce import rules, collect duties, and stop illegal or unsafe items.

  • Inspect travelers, baggage, and cargo for prohibited or restricted items
  • Review passports, visas, manifests, and import documents for accuracy
  • Interview travelers and drivers to confirm purpose, route, and declarations
  • Use risk indicators to select shipments for screening and deeper checks
  • Collect duties, taxes, and fees, and explain rules to the public
  • Seize illegal goods and document evidence for investigations and court
  • Coordinate with border, police, and health agencies on high-risk cases
  • Write clear reports and update case notes in official systems

A day in the life

  1. Start shift with briefings on alerts, trends, and staffing for lanes or docks
  2. Screen travelers and shipments, then escalate selected cases for inspection
  3. Run scans, open packages safely, and record findings with photos and notes
  4. Handle paperwork, duty payments, and questions from travelers and brokers
  5. End shift with handover notes, incident reports, and secured evidence
