What a Navy Sailor does

Operates and maintains ship and base systems to keep naval teams safe, ready, and able to complete missions at sea and on shore.

  • Operate ship equipment during watches, drills, and routine operations
  • Maintain mechanical, electrical, and safety systems using checklists and logs
  • Support navigation and communications by following procedures and reporting issues
  • Handle lines, cargo, and supplies during underway replenishment and port visits
  • Perform damage control tasks like firefighting, flooding response, and first aid
  • Follow security rules, stand guard, and control access to restricted areas
  • Train regularly on emergency procedures, weapons safety, and teamwork
  • Complete inspections, cleaning, and preventive maintenance to meet standards

A day in the life

  1. Start with muster, safety brief, and the plan for the watch rotation
  2. Stand watch, monitor equipment, and report changes to the chain of command
  3. Do maintenance jobs, update logs, and close out work orders
  4. Join drills like fire, man overboard, or damage control and review lessons
  5. End with cleaning stations, gear checks, and prep for the next shift
