What a Coast Guard Officer does

Leads teams that protect people and waterways by running patrols, search and rescue, and maritime law enforcement operations.

  • Plan and lead patrols to enforce maritime laws and protect coastal waters
  • Coordinate search and rescue missions for people in distress at sea
  • Direct vessel inspections and safety checks to prevent accidents and pollution
  • Manage crews, training, and readiness for boats, aircraft, and stations
  • Respond to emergencies like storms, fires, medical calls, and collisions
  • Investigate incidents and collect evidence for law enforcement cases
  • Work with other agencies to secure ports and manage major events

A day in the life

  1. Review weather, intelligence, and tasking; brief the crew and assign roles
  2. Run patrols or drills; monitor radios and coordinate with other units
  3. Handle inspections, reports, and follow-ups with boaters and port partners
  4. Train the team on safety, navigation, and emergency procedures
  5. Debrief missions, update logs, and plan the next shift or duty rotation
