What a Service Designer does

Designs and improves end-to-end services so people can complete tasks easily across channels, teams, and systems.

  • Analyze how people use a service across web, phone, in-person, and support
  • Map customer journeys and backstage processes to find pain points and gaps
  • Run workshops to align teams on problems, goals, and service principles
  • Design service blueprints showing people, steps, systems, and handoffs
  • Prototype service changes and test them with users and frontline staff
  • Coordinate with design, product, ops, and engineering to deliver improvements
  • Define measures of success and track service quality over time

A day in the life

  1. Review research notes and service metrics to pick the next problem to tackle
  2. Facilitate a workshop to map a journey and agree on key moments to fix
  3. Create or update a service blueprint and share it for feedback
  4. Meet with ops and engineering to plan changes and clarify constraints
  5. Write a short update and next steps for stakeholders and delivery teams
