Day 1 on the AI Product Designer path.

What a AI Product Designer does

Designs how people interact with AI features like chat assistants and agents (AI that takes multi-step actions for you). The goal is making unpredictable AI feel clear, honest, and safe to use.

  • Design chat and agent interfaces, including prompts, replies, and follow-up actions
  • Define states for streaming text, waiting, thinking, and slow responses
  • Design trust patterns like citations, confidence signals, undo, and clear AI labels
  • Create recovery flows for wrong, incomplete, or made-up AI answers
  • Prototype with real AI models to test how designs handle live output
  • Design human-in-the-loop controls so users can review, edit, or stop AI actions
  • Run tests on AI outputs with researchers to find confusing or risky moments
  • Write guidelines for tone, error language, and safe defaults in AI features

A day in the life

  1. Review user sessions and feedback to spot where the AI confused people
  2. Prototype a new agent flow using a live model, not fake placeholder text
  3. Test edge cases like slow responses, refusals, and wrong answers
  4. Meet with engineers and researchers to review model behavior and evals (structured tests of AI output quality)
  5. Update designs for loading, citation, and undo states based on findings
  6. Document interaction rules and share open questions with the team

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Degree or diploma in product design, interaction design, or human-computer interaction (HCI)
  • Degree in psychology, linguistics, or computer science plus a design portfolio
  • UX or product design bootcamp plus self-study on how AI models behave
  • Self-taught route: design courses, daily practice with AI tools, and case studies

How people get their first job

  • Build a portfolio with 2 to 3 case studies of AI feature designs and prototypes
  • Start as a product or UX designer and volunteer for your team's AI features
  • Prototype a small AI assistant with no-code or AI coding tools and document it
  • Join AI design challenges or hackathons and ship something testable
  • Write public teardowns of AI products, showing what works and what fails
