Day 1 on the Design Systems Lead path.

What a Design Systems Lead does

Builds and runs the design system: the shared library of reusable components, rules, and design tokens (named values for color, spacing, and type) that every product team uses. The job keeps screens consistent. It also gives AI code-generation tools a trusted source to build against.

  • Build and maintain the shared component library used across all product teams
  • Define design tokens for color, spacing, type, and motion
  • Set standards and guidelines so screens stay consistent everywhere
  • Run a contribution model so teams can add and improve components safely
  • Version the system and document changes so nothing breaks on update
  • Make the system readable by AI code-generation tools and human developers
  • Track adoption across teams and remove blockers that slow uptake
  • Review proposed changes for accessibility, quality, and naming consistency

A day in the life

  1. Review adoption data and open requests from product teams across the org
  2. Update a component, then bump its version and write release notes
  3. Run an intake call to triage new contributions and design token changes
  4. Pair with developers to align the code library with the design files
  5. Check that AI-generated screens use approved components and tokens correctly
  6. Document a new pattern and announce it in the shared changelog

Skills you can prove

10 skills, each rated on work you actually did.

People you've talked to

4 people who do the job, with a message ready for each.

Questions you can answer

18 interview questions and a mock interview, with feedback.

Credentials

3 credentials compared, so you can pick one, or decide you don't need one. None is required.

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Degree or diploma in product design, UI design, interaction design, or HCI
  • Front-end development background with strong interest in shared UI standards
  • Self-taught route using design system courses plus real component work
  • Related study in computer science with heavy design and portfolio focus

How people get their first job

  • Build a small design system with components, tokens, and clear usage rules
  • Start as a UI or product designer and own the team's component library
  • Contribute components to an open-source design system to learn governance
  • Document a messy product's patterns and propose a single consistent set
  • Pair with developers to turn design files into reusable coded components
