What a Packaging Designer does

Creates packaging graphics and structures for products so they look on-brand, are easy to use, and protect items in shipping and stores.

  • Design package concepts that fit the brand, product needs, and shelf or online display
  • Create dielines and layouts for labels, cartons, pouches, and bottles
  • Choose materials and finishes that balance cost, sustainability, and protection
  • Build mockups and prototypes to test fit, readability, and unboxing experience
  • Prepare print-ready files and check color, bleeds, barcodes, and legal text
  • Coordinate with marketing, engineering, suppliers, and printers to finalize specs
  • Review proofs and approve changes to avoid print errors and delays

A day in the life

  1. Review briefs, product samples, and constraints like size, budget, and regulations
  2. Sketch concepts, then build dielines and artwork in design software
  3. Meet with teammates and suppliers to confirm materials, finishes, and timelines
  4. Check proofs, run preflight checks, and hand off final files for production
