Day 1 on the CAD Designer path.

What a CAD Designer does

Creates accurate 2D drawings and 3D models for engineers and makers so parts can be built, tested, and manufactured correctly.

  • Design 2D drawings and 3D models from sketches, specs, and measurements
  • Update CAD files after design reviews, testing feedback, and change requests
  • Create detailed drawings with dimensions, tolerances, notes, and materials
  • Build assemblies and check fit, clearances, and basic motion in 3D
  • Coordinate with engineers, manufacturing, and suppliers to resolve issues
  • Maintain part numbers, revisions, and file organization in a CAD system
  • Prepare files for prototypes, CNC machining, 3D printing, or tooling

A day in the life

  1. Review new requests, specs, and reference files, then plan modeling tasks
  2. Model parts and assemblies, then add dimensions and drawing notes
  3. Join a short design review to confirm changes and answer questions
  4. Fix issues found by manufacturing and release updated revisions

Tools you will use

CAD software: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360PDM and PLM: Autodesk Vault, SolidWorks PDMDocumentation: Microsoft Excel, Google SheetsPrototyping: 3D printing, CNC basicsStandards: ISO drawings, ASME Y14.5 GD&T
