Day 1 on the Mechanical Drafter path.

What a Mechanical Drafter does

Creates accurate mechanical drawings and assembly documents so engineers, makers, and builders can manufacture and assemble parts correctly.

  • Draft 2D drawings and 3D models from engineer sketches and design notes
  • Add dimensions, tolerances, materials, and surface finish notes to drawings
  • Create assembly drawings with exploded views and parts lists
  • Update drawings after design changes and track revisions clearly
  • Check drawings for fit, clearances, and basic manufacturability issues
  • Follow drafting standards and company templates for consistent output
  • Coordinate with engineers, manufacturing, and suppliers to resolve questions

A day in the life

  1. Review new design requests, specs, and markups from engineers
  2. Model parts and create drawings, then run self-checks for errors
  3. Join quick check-ins to clarify changes and agree on next steps
  4. Release drawing packages and respond to shop or supplier questions

Tools you will use

CAD: AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Autodesk InventorPDM and PLM: Autodesk Vault, SOLIDWORKS PDMMeasurement: calipers, micrometersDocumentation: Microsoft Excel, Google SheetsMarkup and review: Bluebeam Revu, Adobe AcrobatStandards: ISO, ASME Y14.5
