Day 1 on the Landscape Architect path.

What a Landscape Architect does

Plan and design outdoor places for communities and owners, creating spaces that look good, work well, and protect nature.

  • Design site layouts for parks, streets, campuses, and housing areas
  • Analyze site conditions like slopes, soils, drainage, sun, and existing plants
  • Create concept sketches, plans, and 3D views to explain design ideas
  • Select plants and materials that fit climate, maintenance, and accessibility needs
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, and contractors to align the full project
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for construction
  • Review permits and codes for safety, access, and environmental compliance
  • Visit sites during construction to check quality and solve on-site issues

A day in the life

  1. Review site survey data, photos, and client goals to plan next design steps
  2. Draft plans in CAD and update planting lists, materials, and details
  3. Meet with stakeholders to review options, trade-offs, and budget impacts
  4. Coordinate with engineers on grading and drainage, then revise drawings
  5. Do a site visit or construction check, then write notes and action items
