What a Fashion Designer does

Designs clothing and accessories for brands or clients by turning ideas and trends into wearable pieces ready for sampling and production.

  • Design garment concepts, silhouettes, and collections for a season or brief
  • Research trends, customer needs, and competitor products to guide designs
  • Sketch designs and build technical flats for clear construction details
  • Select fabrics, trims, colors, and prints that fit cost and quality targets
  • Create tech packs with measurements, materials, and sewing instructions
  • Fit and adjust samples on models, mannequins, or dress forms
  • Coordinate with pattern makers and factories to solve construction issues
  • Present designs to teams or clients and update based on feedback

A day in the life

  1. Review mood boards, sales notes, and trend research to plan todays design tasks
  2. Sketch and refine a few key looks, then update flats and measurements
  3. Meet with pattern and sample teams to review fit and fix construction issues
  4. Source fabrics and trims, compare swatches, and confirm color choices
  5. Prepare a short design review and capture feedback for the next iteration
