What a Interior Designer does

Plan and design indoor spaces for homes and businesses so they look good, work well, and fit budget and safety needs.

  • Design room layouts that improve flow, comfort, and accessibility
  • Create mood boards with colors, materials, furniture, and lighting ideas
  • Measure spaces and produce floor plans and basic 3D views
  • Select finishes and fixtures that meet durability, cost, and style goals
  • Coordinate with contractors and suppliers to deliver the design plan
  • Prepare budgets, timelines, and purchase lists for client approval
  • Present options to clients and revise designs based on feedback

A day in the life

  1. Review client brief, budget, and inspiration images, then sketch options
  2. Visit a site to measure, take photos, and check lighting and constraints
  3. Build a floor plan and 3D mockup, then choose materials and furniture
  4. Meet clients and contractors to confirm decisions and solve issues
  5. Track orders and schedules, and update the plan when items change
