Day 1 on the Tariff Mitigation Strategist path.

What a Tariff Mitigation Strategist does

Finds legal ways to lower the tariffs, the taxes a company pays when it imports goods, so products cost less to bring across borders. This work shifts as trade rules change, and tariff rates differ by country, so a strategist tracks both US and EU tariff moves and plans around them.

  • Model how new tariffs change the landed cost (total import cost) of goods
  • Compare sourcing options across countries to find lower-tariff supply routes
  • Use tariff engineering: real product changes that legally place an item in a lower-duty code
  • Use free-trade zones (FTZ) and bonded warehouses, duty-deferring storage, to cut costs
  • Check country of origin (where a product is legally made) to claim better rates
  • Classify goods under harmonised system (HS) codes that set each tariff rate
  • Build cost scenarios to show leaders the savings of each tariff strategy

A day in the life

  1. Scan news for US and EU tariff changes that hit current products
  2. Update a cost model with new duty rates and shipment volumes
  3. Compare two sourcing countries to see which lowers tariff cost
  4. Meet sourcing and legal teams to test an origin or code idea
  5. Write a short brief showing savings and risks of one option
  6. Check that a planned product change still passes origin rules
