What a Materials Planner does

Plans and schedules the right materials for production so factories and warehouses can build and ship on time without shortages or excess stock.

  • Analyze demand and production plans to calculate material needs
  • Create purchase and transfer plans for parts and raw materials
  • Monitor inventory levels and set reorder points and safety stock
  • Coordinate with suppliers on lead times, delays, and delivery dates
  • Resolve material shortages by expediting, reallocating, or finding substitutes
  • Update planning data like bills of materials, lead times, and lot sizes
  • Communicate risks and changes to production, purchasing, and logistics teams

A day in the life

  1. Check shortages and late orders, then set priorities for the day
  2. Review MRP suggestions and adjust plans based on real constraints
  3. Meet with production and purchasing to align on what can be built
  4. Track supplier updates and escalate issues that threaten schedules
  5. End day by updating systems and sharing a clear status report
