What a Freight Forwarder does

Plans and coordinates international shipments for businesses by booking transport, preparing documents, and tracking delivery to reduce delays and costs.

  • Coordinate shipment plans across air, ocean, rail, and road carriers
  • Prepare and check shipping documents like invoices, packing lists, and bills of lading
  • Request quotes, compare routes, and negotiate rates and transit times
  • Track cargo status and update customers on milestones and delays
  • Coordinate customs clearance steps and resolve holds with brokers and ports
  • Arrange warehousing, consolidation, labeling, and last-mile delivery when needed
  • Handle exceptions like damage, missed cutoffs, and rebooking during disruptions

A day in the life

  1. Check overnight shipment updates and flag any delays or customs holds
  2. Book space with carriers and confirm pickup and delivery appointments
  3. Review documents for accuracy and send instructions to partners and drivers
  4. Answer customer questions and share tracking updates and ETAs
  5. Close out files, reconcile charges, and note issues to prevent repeats
