Day 1 on the Welding Engineer path.

What a Welding Engineer does

Plans and improves welding methods and quality checks so factories and construction teams can build safe, repeatable metal joints.

  • Design welding procedures for new parts and materials
  • Select weld processes, filler metals, and joint designs
  • Set parameters and qualify welders and procedures
  • Investigate weld defects and find root causes
  • Define inspection plans with NDT and visual checks
  • Write welding standards, work instructions, and records
  • Support production teams during trials and ramp-up
  • Coordinate with design, quality, and safety teams

A day in the life

  1. Review drawings and plan weld steps for a new build
  2. Walk the shop floor to observe welds and troubleshoot issues
  3. Meet with quality to review defect data and corrective actions
  4. Run or witness procedure qualification tests and document results
  5. Update work instructions and train teams on changes
