Day 1 on the Chemical Engineer path.

What a Chemical Engineer does

Design and improve safe, efficient ways to turn raw materials into useful products at industrial scale.

  • Design chemical processes and equipment for making products at scale
  • Model mass and energy balances to size units and predict performance
  • Run experiments and analyze data to improve yield, quality, and cost
  • Select materials and operating conditions to prevent corrosion and failures
  • Write process documentation, operating limits, and control strategies
  • Support plant start-ups, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement work
  • Work with safety, quality, and operations teams to meet regulations

A day in the life

  1. Review production data and investigate a quality or throughput issue
  2. Meet with operators to understand what changed on the line
  3. Update a process model and propose a test plan for a change
  4. Walk the plant to check equipment, piping, and safety controls
  5. Write a short report and align next steps with the team
