Day 1 on the Process Safety Engineer path.

What a Process Safety Engineer does

Prevents accidents in industrial plants by finding hazards, checking risks, and designing safeguards that protect people, equipment, and the environment.

  • Analyze process hazards using structured methods like HAZOP and What-If reviews
  • Review plant designs to ensure safe layouts, relief systems, and shutdown logic
  • Investigate incidents and near misses to find root causes and prevent repeats
  • Write and maintain safety procedures, limits, and operating envelopes
  • Coordinate safety reviews with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams
  • Check compliance with safety standards and support audits and inspections
  • Train teams on safe work practices and process safety basics

A day in the life

  1. Review change requests and join a short meeting on risks and safeguards
  2. Work on a hazard study, document actions, and follow up with owners
  3. Walk the plant with operators to verify alarms, valves, and procedures match reality
  4. Analyze an incident report and build a clear timeline and root cause story
  5. Update safety files and prepare for an audit or management review
