Day 1 on the Polymer Engineer path.

What a Polymer Engineer does

Develops and improves plastic and rubber materials and manufacturing methods so products meet strength, safety, cost, and sustainability needs.

  • Design polymer formulas to hit targets like strength, flexibility, and heat resistance
  • Run lab tests to measure properties like tensile strength, impact, and aging
  • Analyze test data to find root causes of failures and performance gaps
  • Select additives, fillers, and reinforcements to tune cost and performance
  • Support manufacturing by setting process windows and troubleshooting defects
  • Work with product teams to translate requirements into material specs
  • Ensure materials meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
  • Document results and share recommendations with engineers and suppliers

A day in the life

  1. Review test results, then plan the next set of experiments and sample builds
  2. Spend time in the lab mixing, molding, and testing polymer samples
  3. Meet with manufacturing to solve issues like warpage, brittleness, or discoloration
  4. Update material specs, reports, and change requests for new formulations

Tools you will use

Spreadsheets: Excel, Google SheetsStatistical analysis: Minitab, JMPCAD and drawings: SolidWorks, AutoCADLab testing: tensile tester, DSC, TGAMicroscopy: optical microscope, SEMProcess equipment: extruder, injection molding machine
