Day 1 on the Biochemical Engineer path.

What a Biochemical Engineer does

Design and improve processes that turn living cells and enzymes into safe products like medicines, food ingredients, and biofuels.

  • Design bioprocess steps to grow cells or run enzyme reactions at scale
  • Run lab and pilot experiments to test yield, quality, and stability
  • Analyze process data to find bottlenecks and reduce variability
  • Develop purification and separation steps to meet product specs
  • Write and follow SOPs to keep work safe, clean, and repeatable
  • Coordinate with quality and manufacturing teams to transfer processes
  • Troubleshoot production issues and propose corrective actions

A day in the life

  1. Review overnight bioreactor data and plan sampling and adjustments
  2. Set up experiments, calibrate sensors, and record results in a lab notebook
  3. Meet with quality and operations to review deviations and next steps
  4. Update process models, batch records, and change control documents

Tools you will use

Lab equipment: bioreactors, incubators, centrifugesAnalytical testing: HPLC, spectrophotometers, pH and DO metData tools: Excel, PythonProcess modeling: MATLAB, Aspen PlusQuality systems: SOPs, CAPA, change controlSterile technique: biosafety cabinet, autoclave
