Day 1 on the Composites Engineer path.

What a Composites Engineer does

Designs, tests, and improves composite parts for products like aircraft, vehicles, and equipment to meet strength, weight, cost, and safety needs.

  • Design composite parts and layups to meet strength, stiffness, and weight targets
  • Select fibers, resins, cores, and adhesives based on performance and cost needs
  • Analyze loads and failure risks using simulation and hand calculations
  • Plan and run material and part tests, then interpret results and write reports
  • Create manufacturing instructions for layup, curing, trimming, and bonding steps
  • Investigate defects like delamination or voids and recommend fixes
  • Coordinate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to release parts
  • Support certification and compliance by keeping clear test and process records

A day in the life

  1. Review drawings, loads, and test data, then plan the next design or test step
  2. Meet with manufacturing to discuss tooling, cure cycles, and defect prevention
  3. Run or oversee lab tests, then log results and compare to requirements
  4. Update CAD and analysis models, then share changes for design review
  5. Write short reports and track actions for quality, safety, and compliance

  • Masters degree focused on composites, structures, or manufacturing
  • Technical diploma in composites manufacturing plus strong lab and testing experience
  • Short courses in composites design, NDT, and quality systems

How people get their first job

  • Apply for internships in materials, structures, or manufacturing engineering teams
  • Start in a lab technician or test technician role and learn test standards and reporting
  • Join a manufacturing engineering role focused on layup, curing, and process control
  • Build a small portfolio with laminate design, testing, and a clear write-up of results
  • Earn an NDT or quality certification and practice inspection and documentation basics
