Day 1 on the Systems Integration Engineer path.

What a Systems Integration Engineer does

Brings hardware and software parts together, tests how they work as one system, and fixes interface issues so products run reliably.

  • Plan how subsystems connect, including signals, data, power, and physical interfaces
  • Write and review interface requirements, assumptions, and acceptance criteria
  • Build integration plans, test setups, and step-by-step bring-up procedures
  • Diagnose failures across teams using logs, measurements, and controlled experiments
  • Coordinate changes across hardware, firmware, and software to resolve conflicts
  • Run system-level tests and track defects to closure with clear evidence
  • Document configurations, wiring, versions, and known issues for repeatable builds

A day in the life

  1. Review test results, failures, and open issues, then set priorities for the day
  2. Meet with hardware and software teams to align on interfaces and change impacts
  3. Integrate a new build, run bring-up checks, and capture logs and measurements
  4. Reproduce a bug, narrow the cause, and propose a fix with a verification plan

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Bachelors degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or computer engineering
  • Bachelors degree in computer science plus hands-on hardware and testing projects
  • Technical diploma in electronics or automation plus strong lab and troubleshooting experience
  • Industry training in systems engineering, verification, and test methods

How people get their first job

  • Apply for integration test, validation, or test engineering internships
  • Start in hardware test, firmware test, or QA automation and move toward system-level work
  • Build a portfolio with a multi-sensor device and a repeatable test plan and report
  • Earn a practical certification in networking basics or test automation fundamentals
  • Join a student robotics or vehicle team and own subsystem interfaces and integration
