Day 1 on the Satellite Systems Engineer path.

What a Satellite Systems Engineer does

Designs and tests satellite systems so missions meet performance, safety, and reliability needs from build through on-orbit operations.

  • Define mission needs and turn them into clear system requirements and interfaces
  • Design satellite subsystem architectures and budgets for mass, power, data, and thermal
  • Coordinate teams to integrate payload, avionics, power, comms, and structures
  • Run trade studies to choose parts and designs that meet cost, risk, and schedule
  • Plan and review verification tests from component level to full satellite testing
  • Analyze test and on-orbit data to diagnose issues and recommend fixes
  • Manage technical risks, failure modes, and reliability plans across the mission

A day in the life

  1. Review requirements changes, risks, and open issues with the team
  2. Update system budgets and interface docs after design or supplier changes
  3. Join integration and test reviews, then write actions and follow-ups
  4. Analyze telemetry or test logs to find root causes and propose next tests

Tools you will use

Modeling and simulation: MATLAB, SimulinkCAD and drawings: SolidWorks, CATIARequirements tools: DOORS, JamaData analysis: Python, JupyterVersion control: GitSpreadsheets: Excel, Google SheetsTest equipment: oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers
