Day 1 on the Flight Test Engineer path.

What a Flight Test Engineer does

Plans, runs, and analyzes aircraft flight tests to prove safety and performance and to meet certification and customer requirements.

  • Plan flight test objectives, test points, and success criteria from requirements
  • Write test procedures, checklists, and risk controls for safe execution
  • Coordinate pilots, maintenance, telemetry, and range teams for test readiness
  • Configure sensors and data systems to capture accurate flight measurements
  • Monitor flights in real time and adjust plans based on conditions and results
  • Analyze flight data and compare results to models, limits, and requirements
  • Investigate anomalies and recommend fixes, retests, or design changes
  • Document results in clear reports for engineering, safety, and certification

A day in the life

  1. Review test plan, weather, aircraft status, and safety notes before a flight
  2. Brief with pilots and ground crew, then support the flight from control room
  3. Watch telemetry, log events, and call test points while staying within limits
  4. After landing, download data, debrief, and open issues for anomalies
  5. Write reports and update the next test plan based on what you learned

Tools you will use

Data analysis: Python, MATLABSpreadsheets: Excel, Google SheetsTest instrumentation: strain gauges, pressure sensors, IMUTelemetry and logging: data acquisition systemsModeling and simulation: SimulinkDocumentation: test plans, checklists, test reports
