Day 1 on the Avionics Engineer path.

What a Avionics Engineer does

Designs, integrates, and tests aircraft electronic systems so pilots and autopilots can navigate, communicate, and fly safely.

  • Design avionics hardware and software for navigation, comms, and flight control
  • Write and review system requirements, interfaces, and safety constraints
  • Integrate sensors, computers, and displays with aircraft power and data buses
  • Build test plans and run lab, simulator, and ground tests to prove performance
  • Analyze failures using logs and measurements, then fix designs and verify changes
  • Support certification by producing evidence, reports, and traceable documentation
  • Coordinate with mechanical, flight test, and manufacturing teams to deliver builds

A day in the life

  1. Review requirements and test results, then plan the next design or test steps
  2. Debug a hardware or software issue using lab gear and recorded flight data
  3. Meet with cross-team engineers to align interfaces, risks, and schedules
  4. Update documents and traceability so changes match safety and certification needs

Tools you will use

Programming: Python, C, C++Electronics test: oscilloscope, logic analyzer, multimeterModeling and simulation: MATLAB, SimulinkVersion control: GitRequirements and traceability: DOORS, JamaCAD and schematics: Altium, KiCadData buses: ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553
